A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings is based on an original short story by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. You can find several resources on the This Is Kneehigh website.
Mike first made a version of this story for schools in the early 1980’s. Over a decade later Bill Mitchell made an outdoor version of the same story called ‘Windfall’.
Then Bill created a site generic spectacular show A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings which played on harboursides in Malta, Cyprus and Hayle, Cornwall. This version launched Wild Works.
Another decade passed and we were asked to celebrate 50 years of the Little Angel Theatre in Islington and Mike made a puppet version with the Wright family.
In 2024 Mike created a suitcase version which played in an old harbourside building in Hvaamstangi on the North West coast of Iceland. This strange and evocative story has become part of Kneehigh’s DNA!
